Comparing Influences of Natural and Artificial Woody Habitat on Littoral Fish Assemblages in Residential Lakes
Abstract
Coarse woody habitat is an important structural component of littoral lake ecosystems, but shoreline residential development often reduces natural woody debris inputs. This study compared the ecological influences of natural and artificial woody habitat on littoral fish assemblages in residential lakes. Using field surveys across developed lake shorelines, the authors evaluated how fish community composition, abundance, and habitat use differed among shoreline areas containing natural woody habitat, artificial structures, or limited structural complexity. Results indicated that both natural and artificial woody habitats supported higher fish abundance and diversity relative to structurally simplified shorelines, though ecological responses varied among species and habitat types. The findings suggest that artificial woody habitat installations may partially mitigate habitat loss associated with shoreline development while also emphasizing the ecological importance of preserving natural coarse woody habitat in lake ecosystems.
